Bathing a baby with Eczema
Bath time with our eczema baby
There were so many questions at first when it came to what to put on his skin and bath time was just another way to expose his little fresh baby skin to something that could harm it.
We have a very clear routine we stick to now.
Timing of bath- Every other day
We do not bathe him every day. We tried that and it only made things worse. I would suggest just trying both to see what works best for your baby. You are the best judge on when a spot bath or full bath is needed. On another note, we found that 7 o’clock starts our bed time hour. This helps us stay on track with all the lotions that have to be applied.
Potential allergens while bathing
We took away anything with fragrances. This decision was made because of how sensitive he was and all of his food allergies. It was hard to find products that did not have an allergen or potential allergen.
Duration of bath
Per the doctor and many other suggestions, we only bathe him for ten minutes - sometimes less.
Water temperature
We only use like warm water, especially since heat is a trigger. Also, the cool water can really calm him down.
Soaps
The best thing we found was using the eucerin baby soap every other bath. As suggested by the second dermatologist, we use mineral oil in the bath. It’s awesome actually to help keep his skin stay hydrated.
We use rags for his face and body. The little silicone fish is great for his scalp. We still struggle with the eczema on his scalp and this really helps. Mineral oil can be applied to the hair during the bath. I’ve seen a big difference after the mineral oil.
Other recommendations were to use bleach or baking soda. No more than a teaspoon to the bath water. We were not comfortable with the bleach but understand why it would be suggested. Some have seen great results. Others have told me that they live using baking sides, and we tried that a few times on the eeeks we did not use steroids. However, Russell would appear to be uncomfortable when we used the baking soda.

After the bath
Towel dry with linens that have no fragrance and material that will not aggravate the baby’s skin.
Did you know that if you can put lotion on your baby within three to five minutes after the bath that their body retains the moisture better?
Toys
We do allow toys in the bath and the eucerin will make some bubbles. Because everything can get so slimey or potentially moldy, I wash all his toys with extremely hot water or vinegar before he bathed each time. He is actually bathed in his baby tub still too because it’s easier for me to keep extremely clean. We do not do any toys that can hold mold or batteries because he is so sensitive to mold.
If you have any other tips, feel free to share them below. I have more about our bed time routine will be posted soon.
