Where do I begin to heal?

It was so hard to understand this phenomenon. I didn’t have any friends with kids that had eczema. Or, of the child did have eczema they would “grow out of it” or a magic cream would help.

Like any good parent, you begin to do your research and try to stick with medical experts, but I soon found that the experts were all telling me different remedies. It seemed like noone was on the same page.

We knew he had eczema, we tried to keep his skin clean and make sure that he was always covered with lotion.

The first product we tried was Aquaphor. This seemed to be what the doctors and several others recommended. This product was not my favorite and would not calm his skin. Throughout the spring, summer, and fall of 2022 (or whatever you want to call our Alabama seasons) Aquaphor did not work on his face and body. The only place it seemed to help was his scalp. But even his scalp would not heal. Russell lost all of his baby hair by six months.

So, my husband and I decided to try Eucerin too. We would go back and forth between the two but then saw real results with Eucerin. This product seemed to really calm his skin and would even work on his really oozey cheeks.

It was not until we started the steroids that Russell had any relief.

Steroids

In January of 2022, the pediatrician prescribed us steroids because the cortisone cream had not been working. A slightly stronger steroid, desonide, would be helpful when mixed with another cream.

Desonide mixed with Eucerin seemed to be our best remedy. Of course the steroid creams and ointments cannot be used on the face, but the Eucerin seemed to be working okay on his body. For the past 15 months we have used the eucerin and many other products to see if there was something else out there to help.
16 months later we are trill using eucerin the most. His face does really well when we coat it with eucerin

Other routine changes made when we found out he had eczema

  1. Cleaned like crazy
  2. Kept him away from the dogs
  3. Tried to keep him cool all the time
  4. Kept him away from harsh material like wool
  5. Removed all fragrance from the house- even body wash for parents and cleaning products
  6. Bathed every other day
  7. Started buying Little Sleepies - he only wears little sleepies or long sleeves and pants
  8. Started changing my diet while I breastfed
  9. Limited time outside, especially if it was windy and pollen was high
  10. Made sure the floors were cleaned without fragrances- he would be crawling soon and we didn’t want anything to bother him

This was just the start. We would soon realize that if there was a trigger for eczema, then it was and is a trigger for Russell.
